72-hour kit: Important Documents

I apologize for the delay in this posting. I've been a bit under the weather but am trying to pull through.

It is a must that you make copies of all your important documents and put a copy of each in your kit. If, for any reason, your home or files were destroyed, you would need a copy of everything; from insurance papers, to identity information as well as bank and credit card numbers and details. You may have copies of these documents stored on a computer, in the home of a family member or elsewhere, but because of the unknown circumstances of the emergency you are facing, those other copies may become inaccessible or may take too long to get copies of. Below is a list of some of the documents you need to copy for you kits. There may be more or less than this, depending on your situations. Go through your files and check for other information you might need to copy.

Legal Papers and Documents to Copy
Birth Certificates
Marriage License
House Mortgage
Vacation Home / Property Ownership
Automotive Ownership
Motor Home Ownership
Trailers, Snowmobiles, Boat Ownerships
Wills
Jewelry Appraisals
Drivers Licenses
Home Insurance Policies
Auto Insurance Policies
Medical and Dental Insurance Information
Bank Accounts

Oil In Your Lamp

Welcome to the new blog on emergency preparedness! I am excited to share all of this information and resources I have gathered with all of you. I really hope you find this useful as you and your family prepare yourselves for any emergency that may arise.

This blog will focus primarily on lists of things to pack in your 72-hour kit bags and the foods to stock your cabinets, but there is much more to consider than that. In honor of Sunday's Relief Society lesson (which I thought was amazingly taught) I thought I would dedicate this first post to the most important thing we should be focused on... spiritual preparedness. Sister Monson, in a Broadcast on May 2, 2004, described a list of things we need to "pack in our own bag of spiritual preparedness":
  1. Scriptures
  2. For the Strength of Youth
  3. Patriarchal Blessing
  4. Journal
  5. Tithing Receipts
  6. Temple Recommend
  7. Testimony
You can see that this is just an idea of all the things we need to be devoting our attention to.

Henry B. Henry once said, "However much faith to obey God we now have, we will need to strengthen it continually and keep it refreshed constantly. We can do that by deciding NOW to be more quick to obey and more determined to endure. Learning to start early and to be steady are the keys to spiritual preparation. Procrastination and inconsistency are its mortal enemies. Let me suggest to you four settings in which to practice quick and steady obedience. One is the command to feast upon the word of God. A second is to pray always. A third is the commandment to be a full-tithe payer. And the fourth is to escape from sin and its terrible effects. Each takes faith to start and then to persevere. And all can strengthen your capacity to know and obey the Lord's commands."

What if the day of His coming were tomorrow? If we knew that we would meet the Lord tomorrow what would we do today? What confessions would we make? What practices would we discontinue? What accounts would we settle? What forgiveness would we extend? What testimonies would we bear? Will you be prepared?
